Unlocking New Opportunities at Ringhorne Through Integrated Subsurface Screening

As hydrocarbon fields mature, maximizing recovery and identifying new opportunities become increasingly important to sustain production and extend field life. The Ringhorne Field, located in the North Sea on the Norwegian Continental Shelf, has been producing since 2003 and remains an important core asset within the Greater Balder Area for Vår Energi.

Despite its maturity, the area surrounding the Ringhorne platform continues to present opportunities for additional value creation. To support Vår Energi's ambition of identifying remaining resources for future drilling campaigns, our team was engaged to provide a fresh perspective through an integrated subsurface review and opportunity screening study.

Challenge

Ringhorne is a mature brownfield asset producing primarily oil from Paleogene and Jurassic reservoir sands. Production is mainly supported by a strong natural water drive from the regional aquifer, complemented by gas lift optimization and selective produced-water reinjection. While the field has delivered value for more than two decades, identifying remaining resources in a mature environment presents a unique challenge.

Remaining opportunities are often technically complex and require a detailed understanding of field history, regional geological context, and the integration of multiple subsurface datasets to unlock their potential.

Solution

To address this challenge, we assembled an integrated subsurface team consisting of reservoir geologist and geoscientists who worked closely with Vår Energi's asset subsurface members. Our approach leveraged the diverse technical subject matter expertise from exploration to field development experiences within the combined project team, integrating detailed field knowledge and correlate to a broader regional context. We developed a hybrid screening approach that combined seismic interpretation techniques and integrated subsurface evaluations as part of an efficient opportunity-screening workflow.

Close collaboration with Vår Energi's multidisciplinary teams enabled us to continuously challenge interpretations, refine evaluations, and optimize the overall review process. This flexible and innovative approach accelerated opportunity identification while maintaining a high level of technical robustness and confidence in the results.

Result

The outcome of the study has been highly positive. Within a relatively short period, the team identified several promising near-field targets that could contribute to add resources and support future drilling opportunities around the Ringhorne platform. These opportunities are currently progressing through further maturation and evaluation as the service engagement continues.

A key factor behind the success of the project has been the strong partnership between our team and Vår Energi through knowledge sharing, characterized by open collaboration, positive engagement, and a willingness to test new ideas and workflow approaches in a constructive and solution-oriented manner.

By bringing fresh perspectives, the team has demonstrated how mature assets can continue to unlock value through focused subsurface innovation. The project highlights the importance of combining various technical expertise, collaborative working practices, and innovative screening methodologies to extend field life and support future development opportunities.
