The International Energy Agency (IEA) report that despite making up 48% of global labour force – women only account for 22% of the traditional energy sector. [1]

The IEA urges that strengthening gender diversity in the energy sector will mean that companies, and the industry as a whole, will be better positioned to tackle the low-carbon future of the energy mix, working towards a fair transition.[2]

Encouragingly, the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) states that renewable energy employs about 32% women, compared to 22% in the energy sector overall.[3]

However, there is more work to be done to ensure gender parity. Encouraging girls and women to take up STEM subjects and pursue careers in these fields is an ongoing and crucial step towards an even more productive and thriving workforce.
