THREE60 Energy Group | May 24th, 2023

We caught up with Gareth Broxton, Engineering Director at THREE60 Energy, to learn about his 20 years of engineering experience in the energy industry, the current challenges and opportunities facing the industry and his role within THREE60 Energy.

Meet Gareth Broxton, Engineering Director at THREE60 Energy

Q: Can you tell me a bit about your career background?

A. I started out as a Graduate Electrical Engineer at a large Engineering Services Company after leaving university in 2004 following completion of my BEng (Hons) degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering and a post graduate degree.

I have worked in various roles throughout my career, from an Asset Support Engineer at a major UKCS operator and progressing to Head of Electrical Engineering before transferring into Engineering & Delivery Manager roles.  These positions have enabled me to gain broad experience in the oil and gas industry, which I am now able to apply across other sectors at THREE60, including Nuclear, wind, tidal and hydrogen.

Q. What attracted you to THREE60?

A. Initially the people. The really high-quality people within THREE60 Energy are what makes it such an attractive place to work. It’s an exciting company to work for as it continues to grow rapidly whilst building a strong reputation across its key business streams. This is creating some fantastic opportunities for our existing team and future employees.

The role of Engineering Director at THREE60 means that I have more responsibility and more influence on the company strategy and future growth ambitions than I would at a larger organisation. To secure new clients and develop and grow engineering teams is something that I really enjoy. The exposure to contract management and business development was also a significant factor in deciding to join THREE60.

Q: What does your role involve

A. I’m responsible for technical assurance and engineering customer focussed delivery.  In addition, I am responsible for managing and developing the group’s multi-disciplined engineering team to meet the growing demand from our clients, to ensure we deliver fit-for-purpose solutions that support a low-carbon future.

The company has been growing rapidly since its inception in 2017 and we have grown the engineering team by 70% in the last year. I also manage some of THREE60s key clients and as a Director, I am always focused on the Business Development aspect of the business across to ensure we are seeking out opportunities across the sectors that we are operating in.

Q: What are the challenges and opportunities you are currently facing in the global energy industry?

A. One of the key challenges for the sector is resourcing – all the sectors within the energy industry require engineers. This brings a huge opportunity for THREE60 and others to ensure we are inspiring the next generation and educating them about the life-long career opportunities there are within engineering.

In the EPCC business, we hired our first graduate engineer in 2022 and we will develop our trainee and graduate schemes further in 2023 and beyond – the next generation of engineers bring new ideas and new ways of working to the table, while gaining that knowledge and experience from those of us who have been embedded within the industry for a while.

As Engineering Director, I am really focused on developing the next generation of engineers and this is supported with the volunteering work that I perform for the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET).

Q: What does the future hold for THREE60 Energy?

The future for THREE60 Energy is very bright and one of growth and ambition – we will still continue to have a lot of work in the oil and gas sector as we evolve, but we are committed to diversification and that has gathered a lot of pace with the recent acquisition of an onshore wind consultancy firm. We are also Fit4Offshore Renewables granted and involved in nuclear and CCS projects.

The future is very promising for THREE60 and the company will continue to grow at a significant rate – if you join THREE60 you can expect to be challenged every day and you will find yourself working with highly experienced and qualified individuals who have a drive to deliver excellence and high-quality solutions to our clients. The Management team are all very open and approachable and during your time at THREE60 you will have the opportunity to drive your career forward and gain a vast array of experience across energy sectors.
