How our EPC&C solution delivered significant savings on a UK offshore project

THREE60 Energy Group | May 10th, 2021

Improving the efficiency of project delivery is a key component of the energy industry’s plans to maximise economic recovery across the UKCS.

We at THREE60 Energy are actively supporting this through the delivery of innovative, forward-thinking solutions that challenge assumptions, bring people and new thinking to the fore and as a result save significant time and costs for our customers.

One such project which took place last year saw our team of experts support a major European operator install methanol, scale inhibitor and demulsifier chemical injection packages on an offshore asset in the UK North Sea.

The maximum permissible downtime of the methanol injection was limited to 30 minutes in order to limit the impact on production.

From the onset of the project the operator faced several challenges including congestion, inadequate layout and limited operational access to the skids.

Furthermore, a change to chemical drainage legislation during the project lifecycle had to be taken into account and the design altered to address of the change.

By offering a fully integrated service and challenging traditional thinking around the scope of work, THREE60 Energy was able to work with the customer team to offer a bespoke solution to solve those challenges.

This included;

• Determining a temporary location for the new skids to allow for continued injection;
• The destruct and removal of redundant skids to allow for the phased relocation of new skids prior to the change over from the temporary injection;
• The development of a change over and online commissioning strategy;
• Delivery of the commissioning procedure in partnership with the clients on and offshore Operations teams;
• Management of the new drainage legislation to ensure compliance.

This engineering, procurement and construction solution not only provided a safe approach to installing the methanol, scale inhibitor and demulsifier chemical injections packages, it reduced interfaces and ensured minimal disruption to operations.

In fact, by adopting a collaborative one team approach between the THREE60 Energy construction team and the platform operations team we were able to successfully challenge the requirement for a shutdown and apply different thinking to deliver the scope.  As a direct result of this approach the operator avoided system shutdowns which would have led to a loss of production.

Our team of engineering and project management experts have acquired a wealth of technical skills and knowledge as a result of decades of offshore experience. The project was therefore fully managed by our team who were onsite 24/7, and who provided their expertise from the planning stage through to the execution of the engineering work carried out. This meant the operator could avoid having to bring costly third-party vendors on site.

As a result, we were able to deliver the project five days ahead of schedule which resulted in a significant cost saving for the client, in addition to emissions savings associated with additional manpower and equipment that could have been required otherwise.
